One of the wonders of winter walking can be magnificant murmurations (Poldhu)!

Over the winter months, towards the end of the day we chose a few circular walks from Poldhu. This was in anticipation of a fantastic finale when returning to the car. We weren’t disappointed! We were regularly greeted to a spectacular display of starlings as they formed mesmerising murmurations looking for the perfect place to roost in the reeds overnight.

A murmuration of starlings at Poldhu

There are several options for walks from Poldhu.

The walk described here is a circular walk of almost 3 miles starting on the coast path, walking up to Angrouse cliffs.

Passing the Marconi column reminds that in days gone by this area would have been busier than today due to Poldhu Wireless Station. Here the first ever signals were transmitted across the Atlantic by wireless telegraphy.

We were delighted to discover choughs on the hedge beside the path foraging, unperturbed by people being so close.

The footpath hugs the cliff edge as we headed towards Mullion Island.

Above Polurrian Cove we turned inland towards Mullion, skirting the outskirts, eventually crossing Spring Field where John Wesley preached in 1762. Then heading down Angrouse Lane towards the sea at Poldhu.

On arrival back at Poldhu there is the chance for refreshments with a view from Poldhu Beach Cafe and murmurations overhead!
